Economic Flood Related Issues:
The Association of British Insurers estimate that around 1.2 million UK properties are at risk from inland flooding and that the total insured value of this property is £35 billion. The Association of British Insurers has also considered a hypothetical flooding event; a prolonged storm over the river Thames and outer London suggests losses of between £1bn and £2bn.

“To enable insurers to continue providing widespread, affordable flood cover for policy holders, including those in flood vulnerable areas, there needs to be good flood defence strategies and adequate investment in flood defence ”.
Mary Francis, Director General,
Association of British Insurers,
Dec 2000

Environmental Flood Related Issues:
Global warming is a real issue, impacting on weather cycles and tidal heights. On a national scale, the UK is already experiencing the effects of changing weather patterns which has had severe influence on flooding. In the floods of 1998 alone five people were killed.

Social Flood Related Issues:
The UK government demands that around 3 million new homes are to be built by 2016. The reality is that much of this housing stock will have to be built on land, on or near to flood plains. It is unlikely that property developers will be motivated to provide flood-prevention solutions as part of their new build infrastructure.

Political Flood Related Issues:
Flood related issues were high on the political agenda for much of the year 2000. Permanent flood defence is largely inflexible, highly costly and visually blighting. Local Authorities require an affordable solution to a problem high on the political agenda. AquaBarrier provides such a ready-made solution which is innovative, flexible, proven and not least cost-effective.
